American Graphic Design

My graphic design in 1969. An independent study bulletin for the University of Iowa.

I followed the rural mailman in my volkswagen beetle taking photographs of him delivering mail. He finally stopped and asked what I was doing and I explained that I was taking pictures to use at the university. That cleared things up as Iowans have a deep respect for their universities.

At least I didn’t have to develop and print my shots as the university handled that through their photo lab and it was just as well. I had very little spare time because my youngest daughter played in the Iowa City high school marching band. If you’ve ever lived in the mid-west you would understand. I knew every high school football field from Keokuk to What Cheer. And I never realized how many kids and musical instruments could fit into a volkswagen!

I am not sure if this is an Elffers quote or from Henri Hillebrand, editor of graphic designers in europe/1, regarding Elffers.

"The personality of a designer is shown by the way he applies his own language, defined by himself, to a given function. This does not mean that his work must be derivative, for his attitude is different from that of a painter. However, it may be compared to that of a painter toward perspective -it is not merely a method of suggesting the third dimension but the enunciation of a spacial system. This does not of course mean that artistic sensitivity is excluded or that there is no difficulty about finding a personal language. But it is this difficulty that permits a creative artist to be more completely aware of the possibilities of his own language and by consequence to attain total liberty of expression in the final result."

I would like to quote Incahoots today, July 22, my eightieth birthday.

"Like the child that closes its eyes and imagines it can’t be seen, design now seems willfully blinded to the anti-human consequences of consumer capitalism. We release rushing torrents of words, images and sounds that often say nothing at all, and at worst deceive and degrade our humanity. We also create electric works with the potential to explore new ways of knowing ourselves. Inkahoots believes our visual language is a site for the organization of social power. We can close our eyes and pretend the world isn’t there, or we can imagine a better world."

Inspiration: Flagler College Graphic Design

A fairly simple website for the graphic design program at Flagler designed by Scott Jehl, a fellow designer/developer in the Boston area. It’s more about the little things in this design that get my attention as well as the focus on content. I also like this site much better than the actual Flagler College website.
